John Singer Sargent • (1856-1925)

An Artist in His Studio
1904, Oil on canvas

Ambrogio Raffele was a friend and sometimes model of Sargents. Also a painter, he is pictured in this painting working on a landscape, peering at an apparent photograph as the basis of his efforts. This painting was purchased from Sargent in 1905 for $1000 and given to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. It was the first Sargent image to enter an American Museum.

Oil on canvas, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
