Portrait of Henry Lee Higginson
1903, oil on canvas 96.5" x 60.25"

Harvard University Portrait Collection

Henry Lee Higginson (1834-1919) was a wealthy stock broker and philanthropist of Boston. He founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and was an art collector. In this portrait, a Union Soldier cloak lays across his lap, recalling Higginson's experiences in the American civil war. The painting was paid for by student subscription at Harvard, and when exhibited, was given much critical praise.
