Isabella
Stewart Gardner
was painted in 1888 when she was forty-seven
years old. It was first exhibited at the St.
Botolph Club in Boston.
A
controversy about the halo design around her
head, neckline, and full figure resulted in
Isabella's husband, Jack Gardner, asking that
the painting not be exhibited again in his
lifetime. The painting was not exhibited publicly
again until after her death in 1924.
