This painting depicts conductor Jules Etienne Pasdeloup practicing with his orchestra in Paris.

Sargent enjoyed music and attended these Sunday morning rehearsals at the Cirque d'Hiver. There are several drawings by Sargent of the orchestra, and a larger painted version.
