Mackinac Island is 3.6 square miles in size, sitting in the Straits of Mackinac in Lake Huron. Directly to the north is the Upper Peninsula (called "the U.P.") of Michigan State, and to the South is the Michigan mainland. Originally used by local Native American tribes as a hunting and burial place, the island switched back and forth between British and American possession over a period of many years, and was the site of two battles during the war of 1812.

Today the entire island is a designated historic landmark, and there is no automobile traffic on the island, with residents and visitors resorting to bicycles, horses, and foot travel.
